Last day in NYC cont'd...

Our last day in NYC was a long one that ended with us waking up in Dublin. We woke up Saturday morning, checked out of our hotel in NYC and spent the day wandering around the city. Leah's roommate in New Orleans, Cristina happened to be in New York at the same time and she spent the afternoon with us. We took the path along the water around the south of Manhattan and ended up at the South Street Seaport where Leah's friend Gideon works as a pressmen. The shop had a few big steps going up to it so the girls went inside to check out the printing presses he works with and I sat in the park across the street and enjoyed the beautiful weather with my book. Over the past few days we came to realize that because a lot of the buildings tended to be historical they weren't required to stand up to ADA standards of accessibility. I knew before the trip that there would be things I wouldn't be able to do, which is why I've made sure to keep a book in my purse so I have something to do while Leah checks out whatever things she wants to. I wanted to make sure not to hold her back from anything she wanted to see or do.
NYC was a blast as always and nice for me because it's relatively flat which makes it much easier to get around but I was surprised with how big the city is that the accessibility of the subway was pretty horrible. We attempted to take the subway one afternoon which turned into us being stuck in the subway for over an hour. There are subway stops all over the city however there are a limited number of stops with elevators and even a smaller number that actually have working elevators. We stayed at a hotel close to a stop with an elevator so we decided to take it uptown. We planned out our trip making sure to end our trip at a stop with an elevator. We rode the elevator down and hopped on the train. We got off the train at our stop only to find that the elevator was out of service so we checked the map out again and found a different stop to try. Once we got there we found that again the elevator was out of service. Luckily they had another entrance with a working elevator that we got to by going back down through the subway. All in all we spent over almost 2 hours riding the subway and trying to find our way to an accessible stop. Finally free from the subway we still had to walk over a mile to our destination. I decided at that point that I would be taking cabs the rest of our time in NYC lol.
After visiting  Gideon we had lunch, said goodbye to Manhattan and headed to the airport. This flight turned out to be a bit more eventful than the one from Orlando to NYC. We boarded and left the gate a little bit behind schedule which turned into a big delay because right before take-off someone got sick which meant we had to head back to the gate. After all that commotion we finally left JFK about 2 and 1/2 hours late and we made it to Dublin around 11am local time and because of the delay we even received a 100 dollar voucher towards our next flight on Delta, not a bad trip at all and the best part, we were finally in Ireland!

Hava Nagila

Today we headed out and decided to go south toward a few museums. We grabbed lunch at a deli/supermarket that wasn't quiet that easy to get through the narrow aisles. We went into the Museum of Jewish Heritage and really enjoyed the three floors. After we crossed the street and popped into the Skyscraper Museum. It was a small one floor museum that took us about 20 minutes to cover. We grabbed some Starbucks before heading over our friends Nicole and Jay's house. We got to catch up and meet their sweet little baby Noelle. Ordering sushi was perfect and it was so nice to relax around their table with some wine and brewskis. After dinner we headed back toward our hotel. The walk along the Hudson River was beautiful. All in all- an awesome day!

And we're off!!!

Today was the first day of our trip! This morning we drove to Orlando and boarded the plane to New York City! We decided to spend a few days in the Big Apple seeing some friends and cruising the streets before we head off to Dublin on Saturday. The flight went smooth and we took a taxi from the airport to our hotel near the financial district in Manhattan. We had dinner and drinks with our friends Gideon and Cristina at a nice little bar called Ear Inn. It was a long day- more details to come:)
